Responsible Tech Careers: Advice for Growing in the Ecosystem
Highlighted roles for the Responsible Tech Job Board, pro tips, a quiz to help you determine your career path, and more!
👋Welcome back to All Tech Is Human’s Responsible Tech Careers newsletter! Today, you’ll notice a slight change in format as we aim to provide valuable insight, resources, and advice from everything we are learning. And since we interact with companies and organizations that are hiring, along with numerous individuals who have grown their careers in Responsible Tech, we feel like we are uniquely positioned to understand the trends, tips, and opportunities in the field.
From everything we have learned, success in the Responsible Tech ecosystem tends to occur when individuals focus on five areas:
Understanding the Responsible Tech ecosystem
This is why we produce the Responsible Tech Guide, with a new version each year. It is the best way to understand the people, organizations, and ideas that make up the ecosystem.
Being aware of the roles available in Responsible Tech
Our Responsible Tech Job Board is regularly updated to include a wide range of roles that span civil society, government, industry, and academia, along with various experience levels.
See some highlighted roles from the Responsible Tech Job Board below in the newsletter, and don’t forget to check out the numerous roles being shared in our Slack community (we have a jobs channel).
Perpetually Upskilling
Technology moves fast, so regularly updating your skills is crucial. Luckily, there are a lot of great webinars, courses, and learning hubs to utilize. Our organization just released a series of five short Responsible AI courses that you can take for free—courtesy of our partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, which has supported our work. Be on the lookout for more courses by ATIH in 2026!
Since being released on October 22, we have over 2600 course registrations for the Responsible AI series.
Join our livestream on Thursday, November 20 at 1pm ET as ATIH’s Rebekah Tweed, who is one of the instructors for the new Responsible AI courses (alongside Renée Cummings), speaks with Vilas Dhar (President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation) about AI literacy.
Regularly Build Your Community
We frequently hear from individuals that a personal recommendation when applying was the key factor in landing the role, which highlights the immense importance of growing your community. This is the reason why we created and run a very large Slack community and regularly hold in-person and virtual gatherings—connecting with others is essential. Having a network in Responsible Tech is beneficial for learning, support, and finding moments of collaboration.
For those of you in the NYC area, we are having a casual Responsible Tech Mixer on December 8. There are also ATIHx gatherings being organized across the globe; these are independently organized by community members through our Slack, where we have location channels. If you are in Barcelona, there is a meet-up on November 18.
Showcase Your Work
One of the reasons that our organization is so active on LinkedIn is that it is a great platform to showcase learning, curiosity, and achievements. We have seen firsthand how individuals in the community have dramatically grown their reputation by showcasing their knowledge, which in turn leads to often leads them to being asked to join as a livestream guest or event panelist, or a co-writer on a blog post or resource. This triggers a cascading effect.
Why Does All Tech Is Human Care So Much about Responsible Tech Careers?
Here at All Tech Is Human, we believe that we can build a better tech future by having a better mix of people working on the thorny tech & society issues—and that includes you. Responsible Tech careers is one of our three key pillars of work (alongside community-building and educational resources), because we believe that a strong Responsible Tech workforce leads to better societal outcomes.
The jobs we share in our newsletter, Responsible Tech Job Board, and in our Slack community reflect the diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines that are required for complex problems that intersect with technology, ethics, law, psychology, sociology, and more. Ultimately, All Tech Is Human’s career-related work reflects our broader philosophy: building a more Responsible Tech future requires a diverse, interdisciplinary community. It's interesting how you framed success in responsible tech around these five pillars. The focus on upskilling and understanding roles is spot on! I'd also say cultivating a deep ethical commitment from early on, maybe even in scholl, is just as vital. It's not just about what you know, but the principles guiding you.
